This year’s keynote speaker is President Richard Guarasci of Wagner College.
Richard Guarasci, Ph.D., serves as a national leader in civic engagement and higher
education. He has been the President of Wagner College on Staten Island in New
York City since 2002, the longest serving President in Wagner’s history. Dr. Guarasci
is a national leader in civic engagement and higher education. He chaired the board of
Campus Compact, the oldest and largest national civic engagement organization in
higher education in the United States (1,100 universities) and the Association of
American Colleges and Universities (1,500 universities and colleges). He also serves
as a member of the executive committee and past chair for the Coalition of
Metropolitan and Urban Universities (93 institutions). He is a member of the
Anchor Institutions Task Force and the President’s Council on Imagining America as
well as a board member of Project Pericles.
He is the author of numerous publications on democracy, citizenship and higher
education, including his last book, “Democratic Education in an Age of Difference.”
His most recent article on democracy and higher education is “Anchoring
Democracy, The Civic Imperative for Higher Education” appears in the current issue
of Liberal Education. Prior to arriving at Wagner College in 1997 as Provost, Dr.
Guarasci served as Professor of Political Science and later as Dean at St. Lawrence
University and Hobart and William Smith College. He holds the Ph.D. in Political
Science from Indiana University as well as an M.A. in Economics and he completed
his undergraduate degree at Fordham University.
