Graduation Day for ICS High School Students

On Monday June 25th, ICS was proud to hold a joint graduation ceremony for graduating seniors of both New Ventures and Lavelle Prep at the Hilton Garden Inn.

A total of 73 students received their diplomas, while Robert Benston of the Allen C. Bentson Agency delivered the commencement address, and both schools’ valedictorians Vivian Martinez (Lavelle) and Victoria Spidella (New Ventures) shared heartfelt speeches.

In her speech and in front of a crowd of hundreds, Martinez reflected on her time here at ICS, having started with us in grade 6.

She said, “Coming from a small school, we didn’t exactly have everything handed to us. We couldn’t have a big football field or a huge gym, but we made the best out of what we had and yet we’re all the better for it. We come from a society that likes to write off students who are minorities and come from low-income families, but we are more than a statistic. Each and every one of us graduating should be proud of all the hard times that we endured to be sitting here today.”

New Ventures Principal Ronald Gorsky had similar sentiments on the special occasion saying, “My favorite poet Maya Angelou said, ‘I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.’New Ventures is a place where second chances are second nature.” In fact, 45 “second chances” walked the stage and received their diplomas that day.
