Our New Ventures students began another year of partnership with @averyspecialplace, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental differences in leading fulfilling and independent lives.
Through a new fieldwork course, students gain hands-on experience that aligns with this mission while developing empathy, patience, and communication skills. After training in disability awareness, safety, and HIPAA compliance, students engage directly with AVSP participants in activities like braiding hair, shooting hoops, and creative coloring. These interactions foster meaningful connections and help students reflect on holistic well-being—mind, body, and spirit.

We all longed for a place we had never been
On that journey, we all wound up on the same broken path that led us here The light was on and the door was open
And each of us was welcomed with faces that felt familiar and knew us
We`ve all come from someplace where we never quite fit
Where the world felt big and we felt small
Each of us arrived carrying a piece that was deemed too big, too loud, too much
We were trying to fit ourselves into spaces that never quite held us
Our village is small but we`ve built a home that is always open to receive us
That makes our losses and failures seem far away
Eyes that light up when we enter
And who still loves us the same on our bad days
Maybe even a little more
And celebrates us in our small and big wins

With a Master’s from Silberman School of Social Work and a Bachelor`s in Psychology, Ms. Velonis all about creating a welcoming space where every student can shine. She`s a big believer in the power of encouragement and the right support to help everyone reach their full potential. When she`s not at school, you can find her strolling around town, enjoying movie nights, or hanging out with her adorable feline friend. We`re looking forward to another year with Ms. Velonis!
