Lavelle Prep High School Celebrates College Signing Day

The future is bright for the Lavelle Preparatory Charter School Class of 2022.

On Monday, May 16, 48 Lavelle seniors proudly announced their plans for college and career to their teachers and the school’s 10th and 11th graders gathered in the auditorium for College Signing Day.

Of 48 seniors, 46 are heading to colleges and two are committed to the military.

“It has been a high school experience unlike any other,” Kelly McNamara, college advisor for Integration Charter Schools, told the students. “I am certain you will continue to face your obstacles with the strength, grace and commitment you have demonstrated throughout high school.”

She acknowledged the teachers, parents and mentors who encouraged them along the way, and praised the graduating seniors for their perseverance.

“After many years of hard work, all those late nights and tough classes, you were determined to go to college. All of it has paid off because you have made it to this moment.”

In a Q&A session, Ms. McNamara asked the seniors to explain how they made their selections.

Wearing a Wagner College sweatshirt, Artan Shaini said he will enjoy seeing the New York City skyline from the Grymes Hill campus and can’t wait to take advantage of Wagner’s free shuttle service to the St. George ferry terminal.

Artan is serving as student body president this year at Lavelle.

Jahmar Acosta, who is heading to the State University of New York at Morrisville, said the equine program influenced his decision.

The seniors advised the sophomores and juniors to start thinking about their futures now by looking at colleges and getting familiar with the application process.

“Don’t procrastinate because you could miss deadlines,” several said firmly.

Moses Jacob’s choice is the cell biology and neuroscience program at Rutgers University. He plans to complete his education and training to become a neurosurgeon in seven years.

At the conclusion of the program, each senior signed a commitment certificate promising to continue their education and training after high school.

“We all look forward to watching you achieve your goals and are excited to see what the future holds for you,” Ms. McNamara said. “We can’t wait for you to come back as alumni and share your future success stories with us.”
